As executive producers of the 2011 Carriacou Maroon & String Band Music Festival, the Grenada Board of Tourism, in collaboration with the cultural community of Carriacou, is pleased to announce that the launch event for this year’s Festival will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 11.00 a.m. in Hillsborough.

It is expected that the Hon. Peter David - Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Senator the Hon. Arley Gill – Minister for Culture, Information and ICT, and Senator the Hon. George Prime – Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, will be in attendance. The Honourable Elvin Nimrod, Parliamentary Representative for Carriacou and Petite Martinique has also been invited to the launch. So too are the sponsors from both Grenada and Carriacou.

The Festival, which is regarded as a major brand event for Carriacou, will take place from April 29 to May 1, 2011. It will feature the traditional smoke food, big drum nation dance and other cultural art forms of the people of Carriacou.  An exciting feature involving musical renditions from regional string bands will be a key aspect of this year’s event.  Confirmation has been received from invited string bands from the British Virgin Islands, Tobago, St. Lucia, Guadeloupe, Trinidad, Grenada and host island, Carriacou.

This Festival, which is the first of its kind in the region, debuted last year.  It is expected to evolve into a strong tourist attraction that embraces cultural entertainment and educational products as a celebration of the culture of the people of Carriacou and neighbouring islands.
